The Cofrancescos found in Guardia Sanframondi probably moved there from the nearby town of Cerreto Sannita.
The origin of the town is not clear, even if its name is connected to the Norman family Sanframondo. The medieval town developed around a castle dating from the time of the Norman domination. Ancient walls with four main doors enclose the center of the town, and it still retains the characteristic little streets of the medieval ages.

In the past the main occupation of the people of Guardia was leather craftsmanship, and because of this it was also called "Guardia delle sole" ("Guard of the soles"). Today Guardia Sanframondi is very well known for its production of great wines and olive oil.
