8. The Catasto Generale (Cadastre General) of S. Lorenzello

To follow the evolution and movements of the Cofrancesco families we have another very important document: the Catasto Generale della Terra di San Lorenzello ("The Cadastre General of the Land of San Lorenzello"), drawn up after 1742 by order of the King Charles III for a census of the revenues of all the families of the Kingdom of Naples. Besides cadastral data, such as revenues and charges ("rendite" and "pesi"), some personal data, such as ages and relationships, are recorded as well as the place where the house is located and if it is owned or rented.

The date written on the first page of the Catasto Generale of S. Lorenzello (usually called also Onciario because all the revenues and charges were calculated in ounces, "once") is 1754, but most likely it was started some years before, around 1743, as it happened for the other Cadastres, and the work lasted for some years.

The comparison of the results of the Catasto of 1750 with the one described in the Stato dell’anime of 1714 is very interesting. After about 30 years, we still find 10 families with male Cofrancesco heads, 6 families with Cofrancesco wives, and 3 widows, nee Cofrancesco, living in S. Lorenzello with their children and/or grandchildren, as well as the widow of another Cofrancesco male family head who died a few years earlier. The Cadastre does not give the name of the parents of the Cofrancesco women, but by cross matching with other information from marriage records it’s possible to find their origins with a high degree of confidence in almost all cases.

Let’s look at the families with Cofrancesco members recorded in the Catasto, starting from the Cofrancesco male heads of family:

Antonio 42 years old (born on 18 October 1697), son of Tommaso (son of Giovanni Donato) and Caterina di Lucrezia, with his wife Lorenza Rubbano (44 years old) (District da pie’ della Terra, Terra (land) is a place at the foot of Mount Erbano)

Giovanni Donato 56 years old (born on 10 March 1684), son of Antonio and Vittoria Rubbano, widower of Vittoria Mattei

Marco* 60 years old (born on 21 February 1681), son of Simone and Isabella Sagnella, widower of Tommasina Tacinella (Avantisanti Street, same house)

Nicola 26 years old (born on 20 September 1710), son of Francesco and Zenobia Sarracco, not yet married – lives in the house once his father’s (District Rua)

Nicola 38 years old, son of Tommaso (son of Clemente) and Caterina Mattei, with his first wife Elisabetta Di Lonardo (40 years old) – lives in a house rented by don Gregorio Broccoli (place unknown)

Nicola 40 years old (born on 19 August 1695), son of Bartolomeo and Licinia Festa, with his wife Giuditta Di Paola (40 years old) – lives in Panella Alley, in the house which his wife had as her dowry

Salvatore 36 years old (born on 6 August 1703), son of Mattia and Eugenia Di Lucrezia, with his wife Giuditta Martino (36 years old) – lives in the house once his father (District Piana)

Tommaso* 70 (as written) years old (born on 28 May 1671), son of Clemente and Antonia Pacelli, with his wife Caterina Giammattei (70 years old) (District Rua, same house)

Tommaso* 76 (as written) years old (born on 17 August 1673), son of Giovanni Donato and Caterina Pacelli, with his wife Isabella Ruggero (55 years old) (District Piana, same house)

Vincenzo* 65 years old, son of Simone and Isabella Sagnella, widower of Lucrezia Del Rossi (Avantisanti Street, same house)

We also have the family of the widow of Giuseppe Cofrancesco, son of Tommaso (son of Clemente), Margherita Cestari, which we can consider another house with a Cofrancesco (virtual) head:

Giuseppe dead (born about 1697), son of Tommaso (son of Clemente) and Caterina Giammattei, his widow Margherita Cestari (45 years old) lives in a house rented by don Donato Sagnella

The persons with an asterisk (*) were already heads of family in 1714, and they were still alive around 1750 and living in the same houses, where they lived in 1714.

There are 6 families with Cofrancesco wives:

Antonia 30 years old (born on 17 January 1711), daughter of Marco and Tommasina Tacinella, with her husband Giovanni Donato Lavorgna  (33 years old) (District Muro di Filippo)

Orsola (born on 10 November 1697-died on 9 May 1741), daughter of Mattia and Eugenia Di Lucrezia, her third husband Francesco Mattei  (45 years old) was still alive (place unknown)

Giuditta 42 years old (born on 5 March 1713), daughter of Mattia and Eugenia Di Lucrezia, with her husband Filippo Ricciardi  (50 years old) (District In mezzo la Piazza)

Orsola 47 years old (born on 4 May 1692), daughter of Antonio (son of Giovanni Donato) and Vittoria Rubbano, with her husband Giuseppe Rubbano  (56 years old) (place unknown)

Caterina 28 years old (born about 1711), daughter of Tommaso and Isabella Ruggiero, with her husband Nicola Facchiano  (30 years old) (District Piana)

Angela 26 years old (born about 1712), daughter of Francesco and Zenobia Sarracco, with her (second?) husband Nicola Festa  (32 years old) (Pozzo Alley)

There are 3 widows nee Cofrancesco:

Elisabetta 54 years old (born on 2 November 1687), daughter of Bartolomeo and Licinia Festa, widow of Giovanni Giammattei, lives with her son Antonio (Surripe Street)

Eugenia 70 years old (born on il 15 April 1666), daughter of Giovanni Donato and Caterina Pacelli, widow of Carlo Martone, lives with her son Giovanni (Pozzo Alley)

Francesca 60 years old (born on 6 March 1677), daughter of Simone and Isabella Sagnella, widow of Bartolomeo Sette, lives with her son Geronimo (Avantisanti Street)

As for the Stato dell’anime, based on data recorded in the Catasto we can map the Cofrancesco living in S. Lorenzello around 1750.

Cofrancescos in S. Lorenzello - 1750
Families with a Cofrancesco husband or wife living in San Lorenzello in 1750

The houses on the map where the same Cofrancesco family lived in 1714 are marked with a star (blue or light red) with a green border. The houses where the heirs of those who lived there in 1714 are living in 1750 have a star with a white circle.

As we can see, most of these Cofrancescos (8 male heads of family and 6 wives or widows) are descendants of Mattia and his sons Giovanni Donato and Angelillo. Among the remaining 6, two husbands and two wives are descendants of Simone and Isabella Sagnella and the other two, a husband and a Cofrancesco wife, are descendants of Francesco and Zenobia Sarracco.
