Buffalo
New York

The City of Buffalo is on the shore of Lake Erie in the northern part of the State of New York. With the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825, it soon became a major railroad hub, the largest grain-milling center in the country, and the home of the largest steel-making operation in the world. This was largely responsible for a population explosion in the later part of the 1800’s and first half of the 1900’s.

Many Europeans arriving at the New York City immigration stations made their way to Buffalo to fill the growing labor need. Buffalo has a sizable population of Italians, Poles, and Germans, among other ethnic groups. Major ethnic neighborhoods still exist but they changed significantly in the second half of the twentieth century. Traditionally, Polish-Americans were the predominant occupants of the East Side while Italian-Americans composed a close-knit neighborhood in the west side.
