Port Elizabeth
New Jersey

Port Elizabeth, a small town on the Manumuskin River near the southern tip of New Jersey was established in 1789 as a port for the delivery of goods. It was considered a fine location for business, particularly wood, lumber, and farming; and the town quickly developed.

An active trade was developed with the West Indies. However foreign trade ended early in the 1800s, when the ports of Philadelphia and New York replaced Port Elizabeth as the principle eastern seaboard trade centers. Port Elizabeth then became primarily a farming area. It never regained its former importance and the population decreased. Currently it has only a few hundred residents.
