Middletown
Connecticut

In the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century, this once mainly Anglo-Saxon city located on the Connecticut River some 25 miles northeast of New Haven underwent an ethnic transformation.

First the Irish, and then large numbers of Italian immigrants arrived to work in Middletown's factories and farms, many coming from southern Italy. Its factories produced an early “horseless carriage”, marine hardware, Royal typewriters, machine tools, and Goodyear rubber products. Once a relatively important river port, the towns industry declined when it was bypassed by the expansion of railroads in the northeast.
